상표 갱신 사기 주의 안내 Trademark Renewal Scam Notices Imitating the USPTO
최근 일부 상표권자들이 “Patent & Trademark Office(특허 및 상표청)”으로 보이는 기관으로부터, 상표 갱신비용 납부를 요구하는 사기성 우편물이나 이메일을 수신했다는 제보가 잇따르고 있습니다.
안내문들은 주로 “Patent & Trademark Office” 또는 info@pto-us.com 과 같은 이메일 주소를 사용하며, “상표 등록을 10년 더 연장하려면 1,800달러를 납부하라”과 같은 식의 요구를 담고 있습니다.
마치 정부 기관에서 발송한 공식 서류처럼 보이는 미국 정부 문장(Seal), 바코드, 그리고 공식 문구 등을 사용하고 있습니다.
그러나 이들은 미국 특허청(U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, USPTO)에서 보낸 공식 서류가 아닙니다. USPTO는 우편이나 이메일로 갱신 또는 유지비 납부 청구서를 보내지 않으며, 직접결재(Direct Payment) 요청을 하거나 제3자 결제 링크를 제공하지 않습니다. 모든 공식적인 상표 갱신 및 수수료 납부는 반드시 USPTO 공식 웹사이트 www.uspto.gov를 통해서만 이루어져야 합니다.
이러한 안내문을 받으신 경우에는 절대 돈을 보내지 마시고, 안내문에 적힌 전화번호로 연락하시면 안되며, 메일이나 이메일의 링크를 클릭하거나 회신하지 마시기 바랍니다.
위 사항들에 각별히 주의함으로써 사기를 방지하고 소중한 상표권과 지적재산권을 보호받을 수 있습니다.
We have recently been informed that some trademark owners are receiving fraudulent letters or emails that appear to be from the “Patent & Trademark Office,” requesting payment for renewal fees.
These notices often use misleading names such as “Patent & Trademark Office” or email addresses like info@pto-us.com, and demand large payments (for example, $1,800) to “renew your registration for another 10 years.”
Importantly, these scam letters often look very official, featuring government-style seals, barcodes, and formal language to deceive recipients.
Please note that these are not official communications from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The USPTO does not send renewal or maintenance fee invoices by mail or email, and it never asks for direct payment or provides third-party payment links. All legitimate filings and payments must be made directly through the USPTO’s secure website at www.uspto.gov.
If you receive such a notice, do not send payment, do not call the phone number listed, and do not reply to or click on any email address or link shown on the letter or email.
